Samoa beach holidays are extremely low key. There are only two large islands in Western Samoa to visit, Upolu and Savaii. Both islands have some of the most picturesque beach locations in the South Pacific. However, tourism here has yet to establish itself as a major industry and there are only a handful of holiday beach resorts, mostly on the south coast of Upolu Island. There is, though, an extensive network of traditional beach fales set up in rural village locations, mostly run by local Samoan families and aimed at both visiting Samoans and budget travellers. These fales are very basic with open sided bungalows with coconut blinds, a mattress on the floor with mosquito net and shared cold water bathrooms. Meals are provided in the price.

Faleolo Airport lies on the north west coast of Upolu, the main island and population centre of Samoa. There are only a few beaches on the north coast, with Aggie Grey's having opened a new resort 5-minutes west of the airport in 2005. The main attraction of the north coast is Apia Town, about a 40-minute drive from the airport. There are no beaches in Apia but the town has a picturesque harbour setting and lots of accommodation. The most picturesque beach is on the south east tip of Upolu at Lalomanu where a sandy bottom lagoon and good snorkelling reef overlook three small offshore islands. There are picturesque beaches all along the south coast with Vavau, Aganoa, Maninoa and Return to Paradise being the pick of the bunch, all with reasonable swimming and snorkelling.

Neighbouring Savaii, a 1 hour journey by ferry off the west tip of Upolu has a couple of lovely beaches. The most popular is at manase on the north east coast,, with Satuiatua and Ananoa other popular beach fale destinations. Savaii is a recent volcanic island with the latest lava flows occurring in 1911 and there are several black sand beaches around the island.
